Regulation of food passage in the intestine of the honeybee (Apis mellifera L.)

Abstract Crop-emptying rate and passage of sugar solution through the midgut to the rectum were investigated in foragers in summer and in winter bees. Passage from the crop to midgut depends on the molarity and volume of the food, activity of the bees and on season. Increase in haemolymph osmolarity is discussed as a factor regulating crop-emptying rate. Glucose penetrates the midgut wall and raises the haemolymph sugar level rapidly. Only small amounts of ingested liquid reach the rectum after passing through the midgut.
