Off-the-shelf GHz-bandwidth D-dot sensors

Every pulsed group worldwide working with pulse forming lines (PFLs) has developed its own design and constructional methods for high-bandwidth D-dot sensors and the necessity of developing ‘standard’ D-dot sensors that are reliable, readily available and not expensive is therefore evident. The present work will assess, using both software (CST) and experimentation, the use of off-the-shelf GHz D-dot sensors made from N and SMA type adaptors and connectors. Issues related to their calibration will be discussed and calibration techniques presented using a number of different high-frequency arrangements. Other important issues related to the use of D-dot sensors inside PFLs will be clarified including, but not limited to, the minimum distance that has to be allowed between the position where the sensor is mounted and the spark-gap that triggers the PFL discharge. Three case studies will be described in detail.
