Optimal allocation of capacitors with stand-alone VAr control systems in radial distribution networks

Summary A method for optimally sizing and placing switched capacitors with stand-alone VAr control systems and fixed capacitors in radial distribution networks is presented. Net savings is used as the objective function and is maximized using genetic algorithm as an optimization method. The proposed method is implemented for a 15-bus, an 85-bus, and a 28-bus distribution network. The results are compared with those of optimally placed capacitors with a universal control system. The importance of modeling the control system is established, and its implications on the amount of savings are studied. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
