Enhancement of Megavoltage Images in Radiation Therapy Using Fuzzy and Neural Image Processing Techniques

Medical images in radiation therapy, especially megavoltage images (MVIs), are often very poor in quality because of imaging physics. For a reliable patient set-up verification by tracking of relevant features, better in-treatment images are necessary. We use reliable neural and fuzzy image processing techniques to enhance the image quality. In this paper, we describe techniques for thresholding, enhancement and restoration of MVIs. We also propose an overall system for image enhancement based on subjective evaluation of physicians.
