With a deteriorating road structure and a difficult financial situation, Japan is in pursuit of methods for effectively utilizing its current infrastructure. For this purpose, it is essential for heavy vehicles to drive on appropriate routes because they strongly affect road structures. In this paper, the authors report on an investigation of the feasibility of using intelligent transportation system (ITS) spots to monitor driving routes of heavy vehicles. The authors conducted experiments using devices such as ITS Spot compatible onboard unit (OBU) with global positioning system (GPS) functionality and smartphones (tablets), and the authors report the results of analyzing the differences in accuracy of determined vehicle location by device type.
