Thematic Review: New analytical techniques in proteomics MicroXuidic systems and proteomics: Applications of the electrocapture technology to protein and peptide analysis

Microanalytical systems have been visualized as thenext evolutionary step in analytical instrumentation. Indownscaling methodologies, lower sample and reagentconsumption, easier automation, higher throughput, andsimpler integration have been envisioned [1–3]. Thesedevices promise to impact any discipline where a chemi-cal analysis is needed, e.g., in diagnostics and clinicalprocedures [4,5], in vivo sensors, quality control ofindustrial processes [6], high-throughput screening [7,8],and in places where on-site analysis is needed, such as inenvironmental monitoring [9], chemical warfare [10], andextraterrestrial analysis [11]. With these characteristics, microXuidic systems are of particular interest in proteinand peptide analysis [12–14]. This review presents theelectrocapture technology as a microXuidic tool in pro-tein and peptide analysis. The analysis of proteins has been continuously facil-itated because of advances in genomics, bioinformatics, and analytical tools, especially in mass spectrometry[15–17]. Although progress has shortened the analysistime by many orders of magnitude (about 10
