A chaotic phenomenon in the damped power swing equation

Existence of chaotic dynamics in the classical swing equations of a power system of three interconnected generators is shown. By incorporating damping in the swing equation we have extended the work of Kopell et al. (IEEE Trans. on Circuits and Syst., Vol.CAS-29, No.11), which proves the chaotic phenomenon for a conservative two degree of freedom (three machine) swing equation. The occurrence of chaotic phenomena entails complex nonperiodic behaviour. Melkinov's technique developed for dissipative systems is used to show the presence of chaotic dynamics.
