Background: The energy efficiency of urban networks is determined with an uncertainty caused, inter alia, by the noload loss setting error in urban network transformers. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a more precise technique of setting the transformer loss power in order to increase the accuracy of assessing transformer energy efficiency parameters and planning energy-saving measures. Materials and methods: The study is based on the results of testing a large group of transformers and processing the obtained data by the methods of the probability theory and mathematical statistics, correlation, regression and variance analysis. Results: We have developed a statistical mathematical model on the basis of which we propose a method and an algorithm of its implementation to assess the energy efficiency of distribution transformers of 6–10 kV electric networks with different lifetimes. Conclusions: Comparison of measurements and calculations of no-load loss power of transformers confirms a high degree of accuracy of the method developed. The proposed method and its implementing algorithm can be used to estimate and forecast the energy efficiency of power transformers and to plan the measures for replacing transformers if their performance and characteristics are not monitored properly.
