This study focuses on the role of training as a key element in the successful implementation of total quality management (TQM). It provides a brief overview of training, what it is and what it aims to provide to an organization. Various approaches to training and their relationship to successful TQM implementation are examined, together with content and the organizational aspects of training, such as timing and venue, and how these might be used to optimize their effect. The reasons for evaluation of training and the various evaluation methods are also presented. The paper compares the cost of training with the benefits and asks if organizations can afford not to train. The arguments presented in the paper are used to create a TQM training model, which is then applied to a company, AMS Neve.
