Chemical Composition, Antimicrobial Activity of Essential Oil from Ziziphora tenuir L. Aerial Parts

Abstract The essential oil from aerial parts of Ziziphora tenuir L. at flowering stage were extracted by hydrodistillation method and analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Forty-four components were identified representing 99.8 % of the total oil composition. α-terpineole (16.2 %), thymol (10.4 %), geranyl acetate (5.2 %) were the main components of Z. tenuir essential oil. The antimicrobial activity of essential oil was evaluated by micro broth dilution assay. The minimal inhibitory concentration values of saprophytic fungi were less than that of other microorganisms and oil exhibited inhibitory effect against fungi. The antimicrobial activity of oil against other microorganisms was depended on the pathogen. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecalis were less sensitive to the oil and oil had bactericidal effect on P. aeruginosa, E. faecalis and Bacillus cereus.
