Roman History and the American Philological Association 1900-2000

Roman history may broadly be defined as the study of the institutions, culture, and society of the Roman world ranging in time from the eighth century B.C. to the seventh century A.D. It is the tale of the infinitely complex interactions of the diverse peoples of the Mediterranean basin and neighboring lands as mediated through the structures of the Roman State. It is a subject that depends upon phi lology, material culture, and comparative analysis with other premodern socie ties.
