Abstract : A literature survey on thermal stresses during welding and buckling after welding is described. From the analyses found, a computer program was developed to calculate thermal stresses and resulting residual stresses due to a moving heat source. This program is included in the appendix. Studies at Marshall Space Flight Center on three-dimensional movement during welding of flat plate specimens are summarized and interpreted on the basis of a literature survey and computer analysis. It is concluded that local metal movement during welding appears to be caused by bending moment and that general metal movement is apparently caused by buckling. (Author)
