Musculoskeletal disorders in nursing

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) represent one of the most frequently occurring and costly occupational issue in nursing. Low back pain is probably the most important, individual MSD subcategory within the nursing profession. Although risk factors are known to include personal features such as age and fitness levels, workplace factors such as patient handling, work posture and job category are usually more important predictors. Limited job control and lack of social support from colleagues may also contribute. The development and use of sound ergonomic practices is an important step in the reduction of MSD among nurses.
