The effects of decision framing are examined through an application of Beach and Mitchell's Image Theory. Data from a field experiment suggest that positive framing is associated with the use of "automatic" decision processes, whereas negative framing corresponds to processes which are more deliberate and systematic. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
