JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED A s the U.S. economy continues its shift into the Information Age and an individual's ability to access, evaluate, and use elec tronic information becomes ever more vital at work and elsewhere, electronic information literacy promises to be an essential component of American public education in the 21st century. But, as researchers Michael B. Eisenberg and Doug Johnson concluded in the March 1996 ERIC Digest, school districts have only a vague notion of what informa tion literacy means-even though library professionals have been advocating the need to actively integrate these skills into diverse educa tional curricula for the past 20 years.
