The invention discloses a method for clearing garbage by utilizing an automatic stretching and retraction function switching broom. The method comprises the steps that when the broom is in a closed state, a locking block is inserted into a corresponding locking hole, and an upper return spring and a lower return spring are in energy storage states; the locking block is drawn out; the upper return spring and the lower return spring release energy; synchronous swinging of a left supporting frame and a right supporting frame is achieved by engagement between a left gear and a right gear; when the left supporting frame and the right supporting frame are in open states, the locking block is inserted into a corresponding locking hole to fix positions of the left supporting frame and the right supporting frame; and finally, automatic switching from a sweeping function to a pushing function is achieved. The broom can manually and automatically switch the pushing and sweeping functions, and compared with the prior art, a larger clearing area can be possessed under the same size.
