Effect of fixture rigidity and wear on dimensional accuracy

Abstract This paper presents a study of the role played by certain design features of fixtures in the behaviour of the fixture-workpiece system. Factors investigated include fixture rigidity, fixture wear and various locating influences. Both linear and non-linear characteristics for contacting surfaces between workpiece and fixture elements are examined. It is established, in this study, that rigidity is a prime factor in fixture design for maximum dimensional accuracy of components held in the fixture. The analysis leads to the development of a formula, based on the theory of probability, by means of which the range of inaccuracy likely to take place in the fixture-workpiece system may be evaluated. Further work on the subject is proceeding.
