UNDRAINED BEHAVIOR OF QUICK CLAY UNDER LOAD TESTS AT ASRUM

TOW FIELD LOADING TESTS ON A SOFT QUICK CLAY ARE DESCRIBED AND A CONTINUOUS RECORD OF EXCESS PORE PRESSURES AND SETTLEMENTS IS PRESENTED. THE MEASURED VALUES ARE COMPARED TO ANALYTICAL PREDICTIONS IN THE ELASTIC RANGE AND ALSO IN THE RANGE OF CONFINED PLASTIC FLOW BENEATH THE TEST FILL. GOOD AGREEMENT WAS FOUND BETWEEN OBSERVED AND THEORETICAL VALUES. AFTER CRITICAL SURFACE LOAD HAD BEEN REACHED, THERE WAS A PRONOUNCED INCREASE IN THE OBSERVED RATE OF PORE PRESSURE BUILD-UP. THIS CRITICAL STRESS LEVEL WAS USED TO CALCULATE THE UNDRAINED STRENGTH OF THE CLAY. THE CALCULATED VALUES DETERMINED IN THIS MANNER DIFFERED BY ONLY 10-15% FROM THOSE DETERMINED BY THE FIELD VANE. /SVV/RRL/
