Development scenario for passenger-car diesel engines with optimised: Combustion processes to meet future emission standards

The main reason why the modern supercharged direct-injection diesel engine is so successful as a means of propelling passenger cars is because it is more efficient than spark-ignition engines in nearly every operating state. This is attributable to the different fuels and combustion systems. Diesel engines operating with “quality” control provide an excellent basis for future low-CO2 drive systems. However, ultra-low emission concepts with a diesel engine — compared with SI-engine SULEV vehicles already presented — can only be implemented through technology advances. This article by IAV GmbH gives an outlook on future developments.
