Three groups comprising of 6 cockerel birds each were given paracetamol at 10, 20 and 40 mg/kg body weight as a single oral dose and one group of 6 birds was kept as control. All the treated groups did not show any untoward symptoms during the period of experimental observation. Haemoglobin, packed cell volume and total erythrocyte count were reduced in all treated groups. Total leucocyte count in 40 mg group was elevated whereas no significant variations were observed in the 10 and 20 mg groups. Absolute heterophil count was elevated in 20 and 40 mg groups. Serum uric acid and creatinine was not elevated significantly at all the dose rates. Serum AST and ALT in 20 and 40 mg groups were elevated whereas no significant variations were observed in the 10 mg group. Thus, a dose rate of 20 mg/kg could be considered as threshold value for paracetamol toxicity. Paracetamol can be safely used at 10 mg/kg body weight in birds.
