SPAN — A FORTRAN program for routine and detailed analysis of gamma spectra using a small computer

Abstract A computer code ‘SPAN’ written in FORTRAN for an IBM 1130 (16K) computer is described which is capable of both routine as well as accurate detailed analysis of high-resolution gamma spectra. It has been shown that a simple Gaussian representation for photopeaks is a good approximation as long as the statistics is not very high. It has been demonstrated that for peaks with high statistics, a sum of two Gaussians instead of one can account for the observed low-energy tail which is approximated by various empirical functions in the existing codes. A non-linear least-squares fitting routine is included which is based on a simplified version of an iterative gradient minimisation method with variable metric. Results of analysis of a test spectrum of 177m Lu by the present code ‘SPAN’ and by the widely used code ‘SAMPO’ are presented and compared.
