This article discusses the completion of the Springfield Interchange Improvement Project (SIIP) in Virginia in 2007. The $676 million, 8-year long project improves the convergence of I-95, I-305, and I-405 by adding 50 new ramps and bridges to the interchange. The stated goals of the project were to allow quicker movement through the area, mitigate motorist distress in the interchange, and to separate local and through traffic to increase safety. The construction congestion mitigation plan is also presented. Some measures included adding park-and-ride spaces, increasing safety patrols, improving public transit services in the area, opening an information center, and improving incident response times. Also discussed are the media campaigns to promote the development, the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) information center used to promote it, and the increases in throughput experienced by the new interchange.
