Design and performance of a new positron tomograph

The authors discuss a recently completed multislice positron-emission tomograph (PET) using six large-area NaI(Tl) crystals coupled to 50-mm/sup 2/ photomultiplier tubes. The design provides a large number of resolution elements with relatively low complexity compared to other approaches. They describe in some detail the performance of the instrument with regard to spatial resolution, image quality, sensitivity, scatter, and count-rate capability. >
