A computer program for optimizing homogeneous field magnets with iron yoke

A program has been developed to optimize the computer-aided design of coil configurations of highly homogeneous, rotationally symmetrical magnets in the presence of iron flux return yokes for stray fields in shielding. It uses the successive overrelaxation technique for finding the polarization in the nonlinear material and a modified Gauss-Newton method for the optimization process. The intended application is to superconducting magnets for nuclear-magnetic-resonance imaging of human beings. >
