Method and apparatus for starting an engine with a turbocharger having a modular hybrid transmission

A vehicle with a modular hybrid transmission having an internal combustion engine with a turbocharger and an electric machine, which are provided in parallel as sources of torque for the vehicle. A barometric air pressure, a road slope and an estimated vehicle mass can be used to develop a turbo lag estimate. If it is determined that a turbo lag is likely, the system opens a separating clutch between the engine and the electrical machine and the combustion engine is started regardless of the electrical machine. The electrical machine is then used to drive the vehicle while the engine is started.
