Bibliometric Modeling of Human Factors

Citation frequencies of publications in a review article on engineering psychology, primarily for the period 1976 to 1983, were analyzed by a bibliometric technique to assess their conceptual organization and development over that time frame. One of the technical areas described in the review of those publications, the attentional aspects of engineering psychology, was isolated by this technique and its salient feature identified as the measurement of mental workload. It was inferred that the other technical areas not delineated by this technique may not be developing in a systematic fashion with shared concepts, methodologies, and terminology.
