Leaf orientation of a cotton plant

Abstract The distribution of leaf area as a function of the angles of elevation and azimuth are frequently assumed to be random with respect to one or both of the angles. The actual distributions for two unstressed cotton plants each a different variety of Gossypium hirsutum are reported from measurements of the complete spatial co-ordinates of the leaves made using a new apparatus. Distribution show quantitatively the pronounced tendency for the leaves to face east during the morning and to turn with the sun and disperse somewhat as the day proceeds. Distributions are also given in terms of the angle between the sun's beam and normals to the surfaces of leaves, both for all leaves and sunlit segments only. These and similar analyses should allow an adequate understanding of problems which depend upon the geometrical location of plants leaves.
