Artificial Intelligence (AI) Center of Excellence at the University of Pennsylvania

Abstract : The ARO Al Research and Education Grant was initially awarded to the University of Pennsylvania in June 1984, and renewed in October, 1989. The Al Center was established to integrate and coordinate our various research efforts in Al in which we have excellent strengths. The key thrusts were in the following areas: (1) Natural language processing: language and speech; (2) Machine perception and robotics; exploration and perceptual development; (3) Task oriented computer animation; (4) Programming structures for databases and knowledge bases; (5) Parallel processing in Artificial Intelligence. This final report outlines our research in all the above areas, more specifically in Computer Graphics and Animation; Natural Language Processing; Diagnostic Reasoning and Expert Systems; Computer Vision and Robotics; Neurally Motivated Models; Programming Language Design and Theory; Heterogeneous Databases; Real Time Systems; and Algorithms in Computational Biology. This final report also includes the final reports for each of the sub-contracts awarded under the M Center. The final reports for the sub-contracts are found in Appendix B.
