Validation of Microstructure-Based Materials Modeling

This paper discusses a methodology for validating the fundamental theory of crystal plasticity (CP) modeling, which has been used for three decades but has not been accomplished due to previous resolution limitations in experimental techniques. The lack of validation jeopardizes widespread use of predictive CP models in integrated computational materials engineering applications. The paper presents strain results from computational modeling and experiments with subgrain-level resolution on the same volume of material; thereby offering a unique position to identify heterogeneous deformation.
