Principle andDesignof a VernierFM Radar System

Thispaperdescribes theprinciple andthesignal design ofa proposed new FM radar system. Inorder tomeasurethesurface characteristics ofa small target atalongdistance, ortodiscriminate among multiple targets, veryaccurate rangeorDoppler resolutions arenecessary[1]. Theproposed system satisfies therangeresolution requirement bydetecting thetarget withtwodifferent resolutions: coarseresolution for measuring range,andfine resolution formeasuring thetarget details. Theprincipal advantage ofthesystemisinthevernier scale forthe measurement ofa distance. Thesystemisjust aseasily realizable as conventional FM radar, requires no special filters inthereceiver, and represents a saving intherequired bandwidth forthesame range resolution.
