CANCER OF THE EYELIDS, CONJUNCTIVA AND CORNEA: II. SQUAMOUS CELL EPITHELIOMA

The purpose of this report is to emphasize the importance of squamous cell epithelioma of the eyelids, conjunctiva and cornea. The material is taken from a series of 464 cases 1 of carcinoma of all types which involved the eyelids and the conjunctiva. A few cases of squamous cell epithelioma of the cornea are included. Histologic examination was performed in all cases except those in which treatment consisted entirely of radium therapy and in which, consequently, biopsy was not performed. As the basis for the histologic portion of the study, 230 cases were chosen. In 59, or approximately 25 per cent of the histologic material, the growths were squamous cell epitheliomas. Basal cell epithelioma and mixed basal cell and squamous cell epithelioma composed 75 per cent of the 230 tumors and have been considered elsewhere. 2 OCCURRENCE Squamous cell epithelioma may involve any portion of the eyelids, conjunctiva or cornea.
