The Astride testing approach: principles, tools and carrying out

Abstract OSI conformance testing is getting off the ground: in recent conferences, various approaches, tools and experiences have been reported. In 1985, we have introduced some elements of a new testing approach for conformance testing of OSI protocol implementations: the astride testing approach. The latter simplifies considerably the realization of the ISO distributed test method which is the most used in real testing. We have realized and used prototypes and generalized test tools to carry out the astride approach. Our experience shows that besides the fact that this approach is powerful in terms of concepts and architecture, it is also easy to implement and use. This paper describes the essential aspects of our experience with the astride testing approach, by using the recent ISO conformance testing terminology.
