Broadband circular patch microstrip antenna with diamond shape slot for space communication

The radiation performance of a C-band concentric circular patch microstrip antenna having a diamond shaped slot is simulated on glass epoxy FR-4 substrate by applying IE3D simulation software and its performance is compared with that of a conventional circular patch antenna having identical patch radius. The proposed single layer microstrip antenna efficiently resonates at a single frequency though the presence of an additional resonance frequency with poor mismatch conditions is also realized. The optimization of side lengths and angles of diamond slot is performed to achieve improved bandwidth (16.93%). Though further higher bandwidth with same structure having slightly different dimensions may be achieved but other characteristics including its radiation patterns are not so good. The directivity and gain of antenna in the frequency range where broadband conditions are realized are almost constant. The gain of proposed antenna in comparison to conventional circular patch antenna is improved marginally. The radiation patterns simulated at four frequencies are more or less identical in shape.
