Research in molecular genetics is undergoing a rapid and in-depth transformation, epitomized by the massive investment of money and equipment in the Human Genome Project (HGP). According to Walter Gilbert, the nature of this transformation can be expressed as follows: “The benefits of the Human Genome Project are the benefits that will accrue from organization and scale.”1 At the heart of this new organization and scale lies new instrumentation and, in particular, automated instrumentation.
