Fibre optic LAN systems and costs

Abstract An overall review of nine fibre optic local area network systems used today is made, in terms of topology (bus, star, ring), access protocol (CSMA/CD, token ring, etc.), and trade-offs (fibre type, bandwidth availability, access complexity, transport and access delay, reliability and costs, where applicable, etc.). The LANs are reviewed according to the IEEE 803.2 standards. In the current fibre optic LANs the double-ring topology with time division multiple access and the circuit/packet switching mode is the most widely used. An existing fibre optic LAN at the Stevens Institute of Technology, NJ, USA, is employed as a model to describe the costs involved in the realistic installation of a LAN. The cost analysis review of the LAN model is based on the first cost (material acquisition and installation), operational cost, and incremental expansion cost.
