Evaluation of partial discharge detection techniques on hydro-generators in the Australian Snowy Mountains scheme. Tumut 1 case study

An evaluation of partial discharge detection techniques used on the Unit 3 hydroelectric generator stator windings at Tumut 1 power station in the Snowy Mountains scheme of Australia is presented. Measurements were made with an RF slot probe, Robinson ERA Model 5 detector, Ontario Hydro PDA-H detector and a recently developed partial discharge site location (PDSL) system before and after removal of coils. Good agreement was found between all methods with the PDSL system achieving high accuracy in identifying individual high discharging coil sides. >
