Modal testing of a post-tensioned concrete model floor slab

This paper describes an extensive programme of modal testing on a post-tensioned concrete slab strip constructed at approximately 50% of full scale. The slab was one-way spanning, with relatively high slenderness, so as to give a low fundamental frequency and therefore a high likelihood of vibration serviceability problems. Results are presented from tests aimed at assessing the effect on vibrational performance of the level of prestress, and of various non-structural additions. Where appropriate, comparisons are made with simple analytical models. Finally, implications for floor serviceability are discussed.
