Effect of load histories on scatter of fatigue crack growth in aluminum alloy 2024-T351

Two series of tests were carried out using variable-amplitude loads. In the first series, all the tests were carried out applying the same loading history, representative of a defined random process. In the second series, each test was carried out applying a different loading history, but all of them repre- senting the same random process as that of the first series. Several factors regarding the effect of load- ing histories on the scatter of fatigue crack growth life were analysed. It was found that the type of history used had a much greater effect on scatter than the material. The loading histories used, each with 5000 cycles, produced an artificial sequence effect, which was greater when the maximum peak of the history increased. Several probability distributions were fitted to the data of each group of tests. It was found that the distributions of extreme values type I and II were those that best represented the life distribution. Copyright © 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd
