CRITERIA FOR IDENTIFYING THE FOREGROUND

A number of studies have suggested principles for identifying the foreground. However, they rely on examples only, rather than on an exhaustive study of a full corpus. My own study of the Biblical narrative is based on a full corpus. The biblical narrative uses the aspect system for the foreground-background distinction. My results indicate that most of the principles suggested by linguists for identifying foreground are irrelevant. The only relevant criterion is the temporal sequence, and the criteria which follow from it.
