Microelectronics' and reliability's new tool: UNIX today

Abstract Today's world of computers for microelectronics and SMT (including ceramic) applications is very dynamic and changeable. In one sense we are now seeing the third wave of computer systems on the near horizon and approaching rapidly. Initially CP/M systems were our first wave; then came the continuing saga of Apple vs IBM/IBM compatibles. These were more powerful and more “friendly”. These are the second wave. And the third wave? It was introduced about 15 years ago but because of various “logistical errors” had initially only limited usability. What then is this “newest” computer “wave”? In a word it is UNIX. This paper deals with UNIX and its features as applicable to microelectronics and ceramic processing; and UNIX is even more powerful. As we step further into high tech manufacturing, UNIX will become a very major “player”.
