Chapter 9 – CDMA2000

Publisher Summary The first stage of the 3G development in the form of code division multiple access 2000 IX (CDMA2000 IX) doubles the voice capacity of cdmaOne networks and delivers peak packet data speeds of 307 kbps in mobile environments. CDMA2000 IX has been designated a 3G standard and is widely deployed with operators throughout the world. It is the basic 3G standard, but in what is termed CDMA2000 1xEv, there have been further developments. The CDMA2000 system has been planned to accommodate smart antenna systems that allow beam formatting. Although advanced in concept, this technique had been in the minds of cellular and other wireless communication system designers for many years. The chapter also discusses that CDMA2000 builds on IS-95 cdmaOne, and as a result, it utilizes many of the channels that were found on the original system. However, to be able to provide the additional functionality and performance, a number of new channels have been incorporated. Channels are different for the forward and reverse links.
