Model order reduction of large scale power system by modal decomposition

This paper proposes an approach for estimating dynamic equivalents retaining the oscillatory modes through an optimal formulation. This approach defines equivalent generators for representing an external area while preserves the study area. The optimal formulation estimates the corresponding parameters of the equivalent generators, minimizing the difference between the main inter-area modes for the full and the reduced systems. The proposed model order reduction is applied to the Mexican interconnected high voltage grid. Simulation results demonstrate that the equivalent system may represent suitably the dynamic characteristics of the original system, diminishing the computing and analysis times.
