Attitudes of Academic Librarians toward CD-ROM Indexes and Print Cancellation.

Lean budget years have caused librarians to examine the issue of dual subscriptions to periodical indexes in CD ROM and print formats. Through a questionnaire, this study scrutinizes issues related to print cancellation. A survey of academic librarians throughout the country reveals that many have already canceled print sources; however, CD-ROM is not the chief reason for cancellation. Librarians indicate that infrequent use of an index is of primary importance in the cancellation decision, fol lowed by cost. In relation to the cancellation issue, many librarians are quite concerned about the long-term dura bility of a CD-ROM and also about the dual charging structure of many vendors. In addition, librarians do not believe that students can use CD-ROMs effectively without their assistance.
