Research on Gain Scheduling: Quiet Past. Noisy Present! Symphonic Future?

After decades of silence on the subject, the academic research community in the 1990's has taken up the topic of gain scheduling for nonlinear control design with increasing interest. Recent work has led to the formalization and clarification of some old practices in gain scheduling, and also to new ideas that show promise of making their way into practice. This plenary lecture will describe some early examples of gain-scheduled control, discuss a number of current research directions, and perhaps comment on possibilities for the future.
