Performance of contactless gas-dynamic seals with V-shaped helical slots

Two models of a contactless gas-dynamic seal, with V-shaped helical slots, used by the German company Burgmann, and with helical slots narrowed uniformly towards the axis of rotation, are compared. Algorithms for calculating the response, the stiffness, and the principal moment of the resistance forces of the gas layer, as well as the gas flow rate through the operating gap, are given. It has been found that the seal with V-shaped slots performs worse overall than the common model with uniformly narrowed slots.
