TRAFFIC PERFORMANCE AT URBAN INTERSECTIONS

Urban intersections are a focal point for traffic and pedestrian accidents and injuries. In order for traffic engineers to deal with the perplexities of intersections, he/she should fully comprehend the phenomena of traffic streams as they cross, merge, and diverge at these intersections. Therefore, a better understanding of the time-space relationships which occur among various components of the traffic stream at these points must be achieved. This article describes the findings of an exploratory investigation of time-space relationships at urban intersections conducted by the Bureau of Highway Traffic at Yale University.
