Optical resolution: an analysis based on catastrophe theory

Intuitively, errors in photometric observations limit the resolution achievable by physical model fitting. This limit is precisely formulated and analyzed. The analysis is based on catastrophe theory and shows how errors may preclude resolution and which errors do so.
