THE TEXT MARKING PATTERNS OF COLLEGE STUDENTS

The major purpose of this study was to examine the patterns in college students’ text markings. Used texts from three different content areas were borrowed from the campus bookstore. Each text was examined to determine the kinds of information marked as well as the way in which it was marked. Descriptive statistics and analysis of variance was used to determine differences in marking patterns both within the same text‐type and between different text‐types. The results indicated significant differences between text‐types on only two of the 12 variables indicating little differential marking between text‐types. The results of this study also conclude that, on a whole, students seemed to have little idea how to efficiently and effectively mark text
