USE OF RADAR TECHNOLOGY FOR PAVEMENT LAYER EVALUATION. FINAL REPORT

This report describes the use of non-contact Ground Penetration Radar to measure asphalt surfacing thicknesses at speeds ranging from 5 to 40 mph. On four SHRP sites in Texas, it was determined that by using radar alone it was possible to predict asphalt thicknesses to plus or minus 7.6 mm (0.32 in.). The accuracy in predicting granular base thickness was plus or minus 25 mm (0.99 in.). The impact of using actual layer thicknesses on FWD analysis is demonstrated.
