Access point for connection to a LAN/WAN device without using cellular core network

A base station or access point 50, provided within a home or office 40, has a first interface, enabling connection with a remote communications device 30 using a cellular wireless communications protocol. The base station 50 also has a second interface, enabling connection over a wide area network, e.g. IP Network 70, and a third interface, enabling connection over a local area network e.g. Ethernet 42. Software enables communication over the wide area network 70 between a remote communications device 30, connected to the first interface, and a core network 20 of the cellular wireless communications network. Software can also enable the remote communications device 30 to communicate with a device 44 in the local area network 42, or with a server 72 in the wide area network 70 , without using the core network 20 of the cellular wireless communications network.
